As an artist I really appreciate all the opportunities to enjoy art and participate in/with art in Minnesota. Yet not all kinds of artists, specially Latino artists like me, have access to resources or get promoted the same way as other artists. Last march I joined a new non-profit arts organization called Latino Cultural Center of Minnesota.

The mission of Latino Cultural Center of MN is to nurture, share and promote Latino and Hispanic arts and culture.

We have entered in an online competition for $ 25,000 with our idea called "Share And Promote Latino Art and Latino Artists in Minnesota". We need people to vote for this idea. I've been working on my first shadow puppets show to do for my Spanish classes. It's a story based on the Warao legend on the creation of the sun and moon.

I know that I have to rehearse more and there are lots of things that I need to correct. But I would appreciate your feedback. I will add the narration in my next version.

I was wondering how well could Google Voice handle languages other than English. Well... you can probably guess that not well at all. It also had a hard time with my accent. Now I wonder why nobody understands me! :)

Here is the message I recorded:

I love dancing. I’ve been dancing since I was a little kid. At El Lago del Bosque (Concordia Language Villages) we love dancing, too. We do some traditional dances and also line dances with Spanish music. Almost 10 years ago a groups of friends from ELDB (Kika, Alicia and Luz) and I decided to bring the fun of line dances from ELDB to the classroom and started presenting those dances at different conferences for World Languages Teachers: IWLA, MCTLC, Central States and soon ACTFL ‘09! The presentation is called Bailemos Juntos

Our presentation is usually a big hit because not only we teach fun dances but the four of us have so much fun presenting together that we fill the room with our energy and enthusiasm.

Sometimes I get to do Bailemos Juntos by myself. Usually at schools. Today I presented Bailemos Juntos at the U of M for the Spanish Field day of CIS (College in Schools). There were more than 500 high school students. I made them all dance!

This is my third year presenting for CIS Spanish Field day at U of M. I hope I have enough energy to do it for a few more.

Performances of "The West Side on the South Side" are Sept 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wellstone Center for Community Building.

An original play inspired by the stories of St. Paul’s West Side community, written by Al Justiniano, directed by Harry Waters Jr., and with original music by Becky Dale and Brandon Nam, West Side on the South Side features professional actors alongside West-siders.

Meet Mai who is returning home for the first time from her station in the army with a surprise for her mother; Lui (PAULINO BRENER), the neighborhood crazy; April, Summer, and Autumn, the three ladies who have lived the history of the West Side; and numerous other interesting passengers on the #68 Bus as it makes its way to La Placita in West Side on the South Side.

Remaining tickets will be sold at the door on a pay-what-you-are-able basis with a suggested donation of $10. Today I learned that this is the year of the OX (1/26/2009 - 2/13/2010) and I am an OX! More specifically I am a WATER Ox.

I will be learning and exploring the subject with information from different websites and write my reflections on them.

Let’s start with Wikipedia:

“The Ox ( 牛 ) is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Ox is denoted by the earthly branch character 丑. In the Vietnamese zodiac, the water buffalo occupies the position of the ox.

The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Well I won’t deny that I think of myself of a hard worker and I think I have achieved great things in my life so far (and hoping to achieve many more). I am not sure I am that calm and modest. I know that I have made really a lot of improvement in my quick temperament. I am a much more patient person (and teacher) that I was 5 years ago. And modest… hmm.. that’s a hard one. I am Argentine, how you ever met a modest Argentine? :-)

Jorge Gonzalez and Rachel Rogness, Guitar and Violin Duo, will perform instrumental pieces from Colombia, Argentina, Cuba and Spain.

The young dancers from Corazón Latino will present traditional dances from the North West region of Argentina and a modern dance choreographed by the dancers.

Raices, band dedicated to the music of Latin America.

Wendy Everett and her dance partner will present some traditional dances from Mexico

National Premiere of "El primer beso" (First kiss), short film about unexpected events during traditional celebrations in Spain. Written and directed by Mexican artist Antonio Rodriguez.

Ready to teach, or am I?

Monday January 5th, 2009 school resumes and I was soooooo ready to go back. Just to find out that morning that I was not feeling well. Not sure what it was. I had a headache and a sore throat that I immediately attributed to the dry air in my apartment. I bought a new humidifier and I hope that helps. Just in case I am taking Tuesday off as well. Lots of liquids and resting. I wish I would say that I extended my holidays for two more days but I was really looking to go back to teaching! Oh well, patience.

Every year I present sessions at two State Associations: IWLA (Iowa World Language Association) and MCTLC (Minnesota Coundil on the Teaching of Languages and Cultures)

This year I have been honored with two distinctions:

1) "Best of Iowa" for my presentation Drama games for the FL classroom

2) "Best of Minnesota" for my presentation Poesías y canciones para los más pequeños

I will be presenting both sessions and representing Iowa and Minnesota at the 2010 Central States Conference (CSC ) on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Minneapolis.
