"A Path Home: A Story of Thich Nhat Hanh"

A Path Home
A Story of Thich Nhat Hanh
November 6 - 22, 2009
Created and performed by
Masanari Kawahara
Directed by Sandy Spieler

This intimate performance explores the life and work of Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese monk, poet, and peace activist. In the hands of master visual storyteller Masanari Kawahara, eloquent puppets weave an interpretation of the man and his teachings in this new production.

Based on writings by Thich Nhat Hanh, this active meditation juxtaposes the simple joys of life with the horrors of war and violence, and illuminates his influential path through both.

First test for "El dueño de la Luz" shadow puppet (no narration)

I've been working on my first shadow puppets show to do for my Spanish classes. It's a story based on the Warao legend on the creation of the sun and moon.

I know that I have to rehearse more and there are lots of things that I need to correct. But I would appreciate your feedback. I will add the narration in my next version.

As I said, this is my first shadow puppet show.. so be nice! :-)

Thanks! Gracias!

(can you guess what the story is about without hearing the narration?)

Experiment with Google Voice and World Languages

I was wondering how well could Google Voice handle languages other than English. Well... you can probably guess that not well at all. It also had a hard time with my accent. Now I wonder why nobody understands me! :)

Here is the message I recorded:
(English) My name is Paulino 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.  (Spanish) Mi nombre es Paulino. Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco. (French) Je m'appelle François.   Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq.  (Italian) Mi chiamo Paulino. Uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque.

This is what Google Voice transcribed for me:
"Yes, my name is Paul when you you know 12345 number there is no you know or no. Those today's quite down so you can call you should not there. As far as well, and to park cut price sick, we can hopefully you know. Winnowed do it today, quite touching course."

And this is the recording.

Enjoy!

Bailemos Juntos for CIS (College in Schools) Spanish Field day at U of M 10/19/09

I love dancing. I’ve been dancing since I was a little kid. At El Lago del Bosque (Concordia Language Villages) we love dancing, too. We do some traditional dances and also line dances with Spanish music. Almost 10 years ago a groups of friends from ELDB (Kika, Alicia and Luz) and I decided to bring the fun of line dances from ELDB to the classroom and started presenting those dances at different conferences for World Languages Teachers: IWLA, MCTLC, Central States and soon ACTFL ‘09! The presentation is called Bailemos Juntos

Our presentation is usually a big hit because not only we teach fun dances but the four of us have so much fun presenting together that we fill the room with our energy and enthusiasm.

Sometimes I get to do Bailemos Juntos by myself. Usually at schools. Today I presented Bailemos Juntos at the U of M for the Spanish Field day of CIS (College in Schools). There were more than 500 high school students. I made them all dance!

This is my third year presenting for CIS Spanish Field day at U of M. I hope I have enough energy to do it for a few more.

For more information go to Bailemos Juntos http://bailemosjuntos.com/

The year of the OX (1)

The year of the OX (1)
January 10, 2009 by paulinobrener

Today I learned that this is the year of the OX (1/26/2009 - 2/13/2010) and I am an OX! More specifically I am a WATER Ox.

I will be learning and exploring the subject with information from different websites and write my reflections on them.

Let’s start with Wikipedia:

“The Ox ( 牛 ) is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Ox is denoted by the earthly branch character 丑. In the Vietnamese zodiac, the water buffalo occupies the position of the ox.

# 3 February 1973 - 22 January 1974: Water Ox

The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.”

Well I won’t deny that I think of myself of a hard worker and I think I have achieved great things in my life so far (and hoping to achieve many more). I am not sure I am that calm and modest. I know that I have made really a lot of improvement in my quick temperament. I am a much more patient person (and teacher) that I was 5 years ago. And modest… hmm.. that’s a hard one. I am Argentine, how you ever met a modest Argentine? :-)

Things come and go

Things, people, jobs, love, mistakes, money, days and night, presents, etc.

They all come and go. They can all happen and disappear.

What we learn from their appearance in our lives is what matters, right?

A one person show for small children investigating Minnesota's historic connection to water. This performance is bi-lingual (Spanish/English) and for preschool through 3rd grade youth. What makes a shower and what keeps all the grass so green? What can help you brush your teeth or dive into the deep? Water of course! The water that we know so well...or do we? Help Dr. Hardwater and his assistant Gotagorda answer questions about water, like where does it come from? and where does it go?

Ready to teach, or am I?

Monday January 5th, 2009 school resumes and I was soooooo ready to go back. Just to find out that morning that I was not feeling well. Not sure what it was. I had a headache and a sore throat that I immediately attributed to the dry air in my apartment. I bought a new humidifier and I hope that helps. Just in case I am taking Tuesday off as well. Lots of liquids and resting. I wish I would say that I extended my holidays for two more days but I was really looking to go back to teaching! Oh well, patience.
Send healing thoughts!
